THE FAMOUS "FUNCIONARIOS" IN SPAIN The moment that I arrived in Spain I heard a lot about "funcionarios". Some people think there are too many and some people think there are not enough. The idea of the "funcionario" is an interesting concept because in the UK we don't have the exact same type of role. The exact translation of "funcionario" is "civil servant" but "civil servants" only work directly for the national government. Others, that work for the local government, are just called "local government employees". Interestingly, these employees are not given any special "protection" and can be fired just like people in the private sector! Hope that helps!
