Many Spanish people use the word "topic" when they speak in English but sometimes they use it in the wrong way because it a "false friend". When Spanish people use "topic" in English they are often referring to what in English is called a "stereotype". So the Spanish people might say: "Girls being more intelligent than men is a topic". When a native person hears this they will be confused! Instead you need to say: "Girls being more intelligent than men is a stereotype". Hope that helps!
